Founded around 1820 by Dr. Calvin Jones, Wake Forest has been a quiet town that focuses on community enrichment and outreach with local restaurants and store owners. There is a large variety of historic sites located in this small town, one of them being our very own Historic Wakefield Barn! Holding roughly 100 events throughout the year, the Barn has become very familiar with the Candlelight Concert series by Fever.
Wake Forest has a plethora of wonderful small businesses and restaurants that are locally owned. All of which we recommend you visit while you are in the area, but one place really stuck out to us. Black Bird Brewing!

Owned by Harmony and Ian, the Blackbird Brewery has become a staple for your Friday night adventures! Only 15 minutes away from the barn and 10 minutes from downtown Wake Forest, Black Bird Brewing is a comfortable indoor and outdoor bar/lounge that makes for a wonderful space to enjoy IPAs and lagers. Harmony and Ian brew all of their beers in-house as well. Our team at the barn had the opportunity to sit down with the couple and learn about their brewing process and taste their creations. You know it's good when the HWB team approves! If you are looking for a specific flavor or type of IPA, they are your people. From their monthly employee beer flavors to a custom flavor made just for you, Harmony and Ian are able to perfectly curate the beer for your special occasion or for a casual night with friends.

If IPAs aren't your style, right next door is their cocktail lounge, the Birds Nest. The Birds Nest mixes timeless cocktails with a gorgeous Art Deco look.“Bird’s Nest at Blackbird delivers a refined cocktail experience in a sophisticated, adults-only space that channels the timeless allure of a lush speakeasy.” - Birds Nest Website. Holding Book clubs to vinyl nights, the Birds Nest is perfect for an afterparty or if you'd like an excuse to get dressed up and go back in time!
“We explore flavor development through challenging and lesser-used traditional techniques combined with the newest discoveries and ingredients we can find. Our highly customized 7bbl brewhouse houses an automated mash mixer and decoction capabilities, giving us more control over recipe variables and the ability to process local non-malted grains. We also squeezed in tank designs for adjuncts, fruit, high hop loads, massive malt loads, and natural carbonation in horizontal tanks. This means authentic European styles, expressive IPAs, tart fruit beers, stouts, and barleywines. Read on to see what local beers we are brewing!” - Harmony VanGundy
If you stop by our venue, whether that be for a candlelight concert, wedding, or rehearsal dinner, the HWB team's recommendation is to check out Blackbird Brewing!
